When I was 10 years old I remember being in the kitchen and watching my mom as she put the final touches on the Thanksgiving dinner. She looked so exhausted. She was edgy and worn out. She’d been up all night preparing pies and prepping the dinner. By the time it was dinner time she was completely wiped out.
I remember wishing she didn’t have to work so hard. Wishing she could be rested and happy and we could all savor this special holiday together.
The meal was over so fast and then it was clean up time. My two brothers and I were tasked with the dishes, and frankly, I dreaded it. I thought, ‘What a lot of work,’ and no one seemed all that happy. The actual fun part was the meal, but seeing my mom so worn out, and knowing my siblings and I had a heaping stack of dishes waiting for us took the joy out of the celebration.
I wanted to create a service that honored these beautiful souls like my mother who put themselves last and their guests first and work tirelessly to create these special occasions in our lives but often at the expense of their own well being.
I also created Hire a Host for the child in me who wanted her mother to be happy and present for those special moments.
Hire a Host is my labor of love to you, the ones who bring us together. It’s often an exhausting task. It’s expensive, it’s time consuming and it’s frequently underappreciated (in the present). But those moments you create are one of the most meaningful parts of our lives. They shape us, they fill us with belonging, with connection, with memories that last a lifetime.
